Established in 2004, the Napper Tandy’s is an Irish family-owned sports bar and restaurant in the heart of the San Francisco Mission District. For over 18 years, it serves homemade dishes from the family’s recipes, using sustainable, local, and organic products when possible, and in season. The motto at Napper Tandy’s, “You are a stranger here but once,” applies to all guests who walk in the door.

Marissa Browne came to the United States as a young adult and worked in restaurants for eight years. She enjoyed so much working in the restaurant and could not see herself doing anything else. Therefore, she made a bold decision to purchase a restaurant and name it The Napper Tandy’s. Over the years, her business embeds in the community and brings much joy to guests through good food and drinks. In 2019, a year before COVID, the building the restaurant was at was listed for sale, Marissa took the chance to purchase the building with three different loans so the restaurant can have a permanent home in the Mission District.

When COVID hit in 2020, Marissa worked with an SBDC financial advisor John DeGaetano to apply for different disaster relief funds including Economic Injury Disaster Loan, Paycheck Protection Program, and San Francisco Relief Grant. John provided thorough information and guidance in securing the funding for Marissa.

They also discussed the feasibility of consolidating the three loans on her commercial property when Marissa brought up this proposal. Eventually, she made an informed decision that keeping the three loans with their original terms is in the best interest of her business.

With the funding from disaster relief funds, Marissa was able to stay and keep the business open. She used some of the funds to set up outdoor parklets, which she was allowed to keep as permanent fixtures. Now she has an outdoor dining space to serve guests that she never had before pre-COVID.
